WOODPECKERS

Woodpeckers, such as the pileated and downy woodpeckers, are year-round residents in Niagara's mature forests. These birds play a critical role in maintaining healthy woodlands by controlling insect populations and creating nesting cavities used by other wildlife. Conservation initiatives that preserve dead or dying trees have been instrumental in sustaining woodpecker populations, as these are essential for their foraging and nesting.
